A 17th-century map of California when it was thought to be an island by Europeans. What they saw was the Baja California Peninsula. Even after evidence had been shown that it was not an island and prominent mapmakers such as Gerardus Mercator and Abraham Ortelius displayed it as a peninsula many maps such as this were still being published.
